Rathmines – Life Stage Transition

Creating an inviting, low-maintenance landscape for relaxed adult living

Project Overview

A backyard ready for a new season of life

After many years in their home, this Rathmines family reached a stage where their outdoor space no longer suited how they lived. Their children had grown up and were still at home, but the old layout and features were no longer functional. The trampoline needed to go. The garden felt tired and dated. And the space simply did not encourage the kind of easy entertaining and connection they wanted for this next chapter.

The homeowners wanted a refreshed landscape that felt neat, modern and welcoming, with simple maintenance and clear access to the areas they enjoyed. They also wanted room for a spa, a dedicated entertaining zone and soft native planting that would work around one very important existing feature, a mature callistemon tree that held sentimental value.

Working closely with the homeowners, we shaped the design around their goals:

Balancing practicality with beauty

The transformation focused on combining structured, clean design with soft, textural planting. Strategic placement of garden beds helped hide functional elements while still keeping the space open. Pathways, access points and the pergola were planned for maximum usability while keeping maintenance simple.

A collaborative approach shaped around life changes

This project represents what Looking Up Landscapes does best, listening deeply to how clients want their lifestyle to evolve and shaping the garden around that vision. Our team works with what is already valuable on site and enhances it rather than starting again unnecessarily.

The homeowners were thrilled with the outcome and now have a landscape that fits their new stage of life perfectly.
