Heritage Estate, Martinsville
Rural, heritage-sensitive, low-maintenance upgrade
About the Project
The clients approached us with a number of challenges they wanted to resolve. Their gardens were being damaged by deer and wallabies, the unfenced pool required a future sympathetic solution, rain made the walk to the laundry and garage unpleasant, and the tired driveway needed a complete refresh. They also faced an unexpected rat problem that caused major vehicle damage.
While the initial design process included the pool yard, the clients chose to begin with the access upgrades, garden renovation and garage enclosure. The guiding principle was simple. Nothing should look newly installed. Instead, new materials and finishes needed to settle
naturally into the historic texture of the estate.
Using recycled brick edging, refreshed deco granite, new turf and carefully renovated garden beds, the works were designed to feel timeless and consistent with the existing property.
Challenges and Site Conditions
Although the property is located along the back roads of Martinsville, the site itself presented no significant construction challenges. Access was clear and the clients were decisive and engaged throughout the process.
There were no strict heritage compliance requirements for this stage, and the project plan was carried out smoothly with minimal disruption.
Design and Collaboration
A landscape designer was initially engaged to design the pool area, but this later stage will be revisited. The design for the front entry, driveway and access paths was completed by the Looking Up Landscapes team.
We also collaborated with a local builder to complete the garage enclosure. Materials across the project were chosen to echo the estate’s existing palette and avoid any visual contrast with the heritage architecture.
Build Process
- Recycled brick pathways winding through established gardens
- Renovation of the front entry gardens with selective pruning to increase light
- Turf refurbishment across the frontage
- Recycled brick edging installed along the driveway
- Concrete slab poured for the extended and enclosed garage
- Coordination with the builder for the garage works
- Return to site for driveway resurfacing and final garden and lawn improvements
The Finished Result
The recycled brick pathways stand out as the defining feature of the finished space. They wind naturally through the gardens and tie the property together with a gentle rural charm.
The revitalised front entry feels welcoming and true to the character of the estate.
Most importantly, the property is now significantly more usable without looking as though it has undergone recent construction. Everything feels settled, familiar and in keeping with the
historic setting.
The client’s positive experience led directly to a referral and a new project with a neighbour, reflecting the trust and satisfaction earned through the process.
