Grand Estate, Ourimbah
Large-scale rural transformation blending formal structure with natural landscape
Project Overview
This expansive rural property in Ourimbah was transformed from a tired, under-developed site into a grand estate designed to reflect both legacy and landscape. The client envisioned a property that celebrated his deep connection to the land while elevating the estate into something truly enduring.
The brief included reshaping an existing dam into a refined lake feature, restoring formal garden areas, introducing sweeping lawns, and carefully carving pathways through the surrounding rainforest. The result is a landscape that feels established, intentional, and deeply connected to its natural setting.
The Challenge
Scale was the defining challenge of this project. As with many rural properties, everything was magnified. Access was limited by a long, deteriorated driveway, while large volumes of material needed to be carefully transported into a valley site.
Beyond logistics, the project required careful expectation management. The client was heavily invested, both emotionally and intellectually, with ideas evolving throughout the build. The landscape also needed to balance two contrasting approaches: restoring highly formal existing gardens while shaping new areas, particularly around the lake and rainforest, in a way that felt untouched and natural.
- Complex site access and material handling
- Working sensitively within rainforest zones
- Skilled machine work in environmentally delicate areas
- Managing insects and environmental conditions
- Integrating formal and informal landscape styles seamlessly
Our Approach
This was a highly collaborative, fluid project, designed and refined in real time alongside the client. Rather than following a fixed design plan, our team worked responsively, adapting to evolving ideas while maintaining structure, buildability and long-term performance.
Key elements of the approach included:
- Careful earthworks and shaping to transform the dam into a natural-looking lake
- Restoration and refinement of existing formal garden spaces
- Installation of expansive lawn areas to anchor the estate visually
- Thoughtful pathways through rainforest areas, designed to feel organic rather than imposed Strategic construction sequencing to manage access, scale and environmental sensitivity
The Finished Result
The completed estate is a confident, considered transformation that brings structure and scale together with restraint. Formal garden areas and expansive lawns provide clarity and order, while the reshaped lake and surrounding rainforest have been integrated in a way that feels settled and natural rather than imposed.
Human intervention is most visible where it adds purpose and refinement, and intentionally minimal where the landscape itself should lead. The result is a rural estate that reflects the client’s deep respect for the land, while creating a place designed for enjoyment, legacy and long-term stewardship.
